Eureka Math

Eureka Math — also known as EngageNY — is a complete, PreK through 12 curriculum that carefully sequences the mathematical progressions into expertly crafted modules. Eureka Math provides educators with a comprehensive curriculum, in-depth professional development, books, and support materials” (Great Minds, 2020)

Literacy

Guided Reading

The teacher meets with a small group of students. The group is guided through problem solving techniques to support the comprehension of the texts that will eventually lead to independent reading.

Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI)

This year some 6th graders will attend STARI classes.  “STARI (2016) is a literature-focused, Tier II intervention for students in grades 6-8 who are reading 2-4 years below grade level.” STARI is designed to support students acquisition of literacy skills including decoding, fluency, summarizing, and debate, which are necessary to comprehend grade-appropriate texts.
In addition to STARI, literacy skills are taught across content areas: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Small Group Instruction

The teacher meets with a small group of students to provide additional support in content learning, literacy, and/or math.

Wit & Wisdom Literacy Curriculum

“Every module, in each grade, focuses on a topic essential for building background knowledge, vocabulary, and writing skills… Essential topics strategically reoccur, empowering students to deepen understanding of core knowledge across grades K—8.”(Great Minds, 2020)

Science

IQWST (Investigating our World Through Science and Technology)

“Students investigate questions relevant to their lives by conducting investigations; collecting and analyzing data; developing and using models to explain phenomena, and engaging in argument from evidence, all in a literacy and discourse-rich environment” (IQWST, 2020)

ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) Program

An integrated instruction model developed to meet the needs of individual students. Students are initially assessed with the age-appropriate World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) PreLas, W-APT, or Paper Screener; and then re-assessed annually with the WIDA Access Test.   • Instructional models:
    • EL-Specific English-only instruction is pull-out ESOL:  sheltered content, and/or scheduled ESOL class.
    • Mixed classes with English-only Support is push-in ESOL and/or co-teaching.
